Paul P.Harris founded the first assistance club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on the 25th of February 1905. Its motto is “Service above Self” a solemn and simple principle thanks to which truth, moral rectititude, relations between peoples and world peace remain the organization’s main interest to this day, a century later.
During and after the Second World War, Rotarians demonstrated a growing commitment to supporting peace and understanding between cultures. A conference organised by Rotary in London in 1942 laid the foundations for the creation of UNESCO and approximately 50 Rotarians have served or serve at the United Nations as delegates and observers.
Today Rotary is an NGO and has the highest profile consulting role within the United Nations, which allows it to promote humanitarian and pacifist initiatives together with this important international organisation.
